The C-Crosser is Citroen’s better-looking version of Mitsubishi’s Outlander and Peugeots 4007 but it feels very much a Citroen, the French car maker having put their own stamp on the car.

Its a good combination of family wagon, rugged four-wheel drive off roader, and sports utility carry-all.

When it comes to luggage the boot capacity is a useful 510 litres, that’s with five rear seats in place. But with all the rear seats folded away this expands to a massive 1,686 litres - enough to accommodate a small sideboard!

Two buttons inside next to the rear wheel arches allow you to fold the second row of seats forward electronically. And the two occcasional seats in the boot area can be cleverly folded away under the floor simply by pulling a couple of straps.

There’s also a couple of levers which enable you to lower the bottom half of the two-piece tailgate making it easier to load items into the boot.

The C-Crosser has a single dial that allows you to chose from one of three modes - normal two-wheel drive for use on road, four-wheel drive, for when the surface is slippery, and a differential lock for when the going gets really tough and you need extra traction to get you through.

The big Citroen is available with a clean fuel-efficient HDi commin rail diesel engine mated to a six speed manual transmission.

As performance, this 156bhp unit powers the car to 62mph in under 10 seconds and on to a top speed of 124mph. Official fuel consumption is 38.7mpg (combined).

The range now gets a more powerful 2.4litre 170bhp petrol engine, with this new model priced from £19,995. It joins the existing 2.2 Litre diesel engine, and there will be three C-Crossers offered with the 2.4 Litre powerplant - the lead in VTR with five speed manual transmission, a VTR-plus version with an automatic gearbox costing £22,495 and an Exclusive trim model, also an automatic, priced at £25,195, and an Exclusive-trim model, also an automatic, priced at £25,195. Even the five seater VTR gets items such as automatic folding of the reclining and sliding split rear seats, cruise control, light sensitive headlights, and split rear tailgate.
