The once prosperous Longbridge Rover car plant is back open again after MG Rover went into administration back in 2005. When the plant closed its doors in 2005 it was at the expense of 6000 jobs so it is great news that work has begun again.
A new MG line has begun to be produced at the Longbridge factory and this will be the 6 model. When the company went into administration, the assets were purchased by NAC, a Chinese firm and they have since merged with another Chinese firm, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation.
The cars made at the Longbridge plant will be produced using parts made in China and which have been shipped to Longbridge. At the moment there are about four hundred people working to produce the MG 6 model which will be released to the market in July 2011. The car is expected to cost the consumer between £15,500 and £19,000.
People in the area are delighted that the plant has opened its doors again and one of the most ardent supporters is local MP Richard Burden who has praised the fact that this world famous site is once again back doing what it does best – making quality cars. Although the number employed in the plant now is nowhere near as high as it was when the plant was at the height of its success, the fact that cars are beginning to be produced here again means that a future can be built in the area.
This is coming at a time when the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders in the UK has stated that the car industry in this country is one of the strongest in the world. There were 1.4 million vehicles produced in the UK in 2010 and the SMMT has also claimed that eighty percent of the UK OEM demand could be filled by the supply chain in the UK. This should all give people the incentive to start looking to build their career in the UK car industry
