Last week the government announced that they are considering changing the current MOT system so that vehicles would only need to be tested every two years instead of every year. While many drivers were probably thinking that this is a great idea, it really does need to be looked at more closely. It might sound like we would all benefit from this but when you delve a little bit more into the idea things may not be as they first appear. The following are some of the things that would have to be considered if the MOT system required testing of vehicles every two years instead of every year as it is at the moment:

• It is thought that if cars were not tested every year, that there could be many defective vehicles on our roads which could lead to more accidents and in turn more deaths on our roads. This is not something that anyone would want.
• With more accidents on the roads, there is no doubt that insurance premiums are going to rise which will hit everyone where it hurts – in their pockets.
• MOT testing centres will see their workload cut by half and this means they will have to make up the difference by increasing their rates or by reducing their staff. Increasing rates will impact on the consumer and if people are let go from their jobs we will have to cover the cost of rising unemployment benefits.

However the government are arguing that we need to change with the times. The MOT system has been basically unchanged since the late sixties where a new car requires its first MOT after two years and then every year after that. Proposals would change the system to the first MOT occurring after three years and then every two years thereon. The reason the government are considering these changes is that safety features of new cars have come a long way since the MOT system began and it is felt that a new car does not really need to be tested for the first three years. However before any such changes take place, the government plans to have discussions with certain organisations for road safety as well as motoring groups and the trade.
